What is it about Elmo, specifically? What makes Elmo so much more awesome to so many more kids
vs the Cookie Monster, Big Bird or Ernie? |
| He's supposed to be younger, 2 or 3, I think. Something about that comes across where the other characters have the older feel they're supposed to have. |
| Elmo has a better marketing team. |
|
He's adorable, and his name is really, really easy to pronounce.
|
| Oh yeah - it's the marketing. Elmo has his own world! |
| I've wondered this too. My 4 yr old charge loves Elmo and so does 17 mo old brother (who really doesn't watch TV but sees him on toys, in books and things like that...oh and he has an Elmo fleece shirt.) Their mom and I are both 37 and were done watching SS long before Elmo came along so we don't really get the Elmo craze. OP is right though...kids really do LOVE him! I wonder if it has anything to do with him being red?? Red is an attractive color. |

Elmo bugs me too. Once in a group of parents I said that I thought Elmo was of limited intellectual capacity and everyone giggled uncomfortably.
Personally, I like Grover. Whatever happened to him? |
|
He was still around a bit... or at least when I got fed up with Abbie's Annoying School sketches. Watching them made my teeth hurt.
And if you couldn't guess from that, when I was growing up Oscar was my favorite

elmo is baby grover. genius. |
| Elmo is a bright color, has a big smile, and big eyes. And a cute voice. Somehow, that combination is gold! |
What ARE you talking about? Grover is blue. |
| I've heard that the younger children are, the more preference they show for high-pitched voices. It's why we instinctively do baby-talk. And no one is squeakier than Elmo. |
| It's the voice. According to legend, the Elmo puppet was just lying around - sort of an "extra" for background scenes with lots of anonymous monsters - when Kevin what's his name picked it up, gave it the voice and Elmo was born. And proceeded to completely take over Sesame Street. |
My dd is obsessed with Elmo too. She likes the other characters and is starting to like Ernie but I'm not sure what it is. I think it's the voice too. However Grover...a genius...he flies into things when he is super grover and says "near and far" in a crazy ass voice. I like him too though

The marketing is only part of it. Elmo only got his own world after he became immensely popular.
The song for Elmo's world, actually started out as a Big Bird song that was "lalalala lalalala Big Bird's song, I wrote the music, I wrote the words, thats Big Bird's song" Elmo just has some crazy "it" quality that preschoolers flock to. I will say that I went to a Sesame Street 20th Anniversary at the Lisner auditorium at GW and Elmo, Praire Dawn, Zoe and Abby were there (with their puppeteers) and the kids could ask any questions they wanted of the puppets and a whole bunch asked questions about Cookie Monster. Like "Elmo, whats cookie monster's favorite cookie?" |
