DC Public and Public Charter Schools
| There's no gifted testing in DC schools, is there? |
| I once heard a rumor about the possibility of a gifted program in the Capitol Hill Cluster (Peabody/Watkins/Hobson). |
|
Michelle Rhee told me in February of 2008 that Garnet/Patterson/Shaw would become a PS-8 gifted and talented program.
I wonder if it's a "hidden gem" and we just haven't happened upon it yet... |
no gifted testing. no gifted program no system-wide models for teachers to use for grade acceleration no systemic enrichment no systemic plans for subject matter acceleration no system -wide guidance on how to group within classrooms or across classrooms within a grade nor across grades no teacher training on how to differentiate lessons for different levels of learners. if your child enters a grade already knowing the grade level material in DCPS, they will sit in the class, do the on-grade level work and if lucky be allowed to read a book until others finish. if you happen to live in upper NW, your school might have figured out on its own how to deal with one or a few of the problems that above grade level learners have (listed above), but there's no systemic commitment on these issues. |
| There used to be a program decades ago. I was in the TAG program ("talented and gifted) in elementary school. |
Completely irrelevant in DCPS. DCPS will NOT do a gifted program. |
Meant to add that if you want any kind of gifted/accelerated program or enrichment, your only option in DC is language immersion. |

We should be lobbying for Core Knowledge, very rich content, meant to supplement existing state standards.
My gifted and talented students have thrived on it. My at- and below-grade level students were enchanted with the rich content. http://books.coreknowledge.org/home.php?cat=314 |
