MCPS Employees Summer and Fall Question

Anonymous
Working summer school is a norm for me. Yearly, I find summer school employment with ease with MCPS. However this year my summer school employee friends and I are finding it more difficult to secure a summer position. What is going on?

Additionally, I’ve been looking to change schools for the fall. I’ve applied for tons of positions and granted only two interviews. I am a veteran teacher and have been in my current building for nine years with no issues. Any advice on how to make my application more attractive to the admin who are doing the hiring?

why fewer slots for students?
because they promised free summer school to any student the last 2 summers and had a hell of a time getting staff to teach. last year they were throwing out all kinds of bonuses as an incentive.
teachers have been saying it for years now…we’re burning out.

Parent coordinator of what? Focus teacher of what? Adding to your resume will Depend on what you’re specifically applying for. Focus math teacher for example, you’d want to include trainings you’ve taken in eureka etc. if it’s a focus teacher position for behavior, think about de escalation

The extra funds from pandemic funding are done and they are keeping summer school free. Pre-pandemic people paid for summer school, which is what covered the cost of the teachers.

Those are highly sought after jobs, they usually hire internally for those, you need to show leadership experience

Those are very disparate jobs that scream "I want to get out of the classroom but don't have any other certifications."

Suggestions are to sign up to facilitate NEO and other trainings, get leadership experience within your school, take content specific coursework, and have excellent recommendations. Oh, and know someone at the schools you are applying so they can put in a good word for you.

At the last BOE meeting they said paying for summer school will be coming back next year.

Interesting. It didn’t seem like this information (summer program being invitation only) was public knowledge until now.
