What was growing up in a prison town like?

I’ve always wondered on road trips when you pass thru towns where prisons are located but towns far enough away from other major cities.

What was your life like living near a Prison? When escapes happened was it like a normal day or was everyone on high alarm?

I believe many times the prison has the largest offering of jobs for the town?

Ya mean like living in Lorton back in the day?

Never even noticed it

These towns rely on the prison for jobs but these prison jobs are very depressing and anxiety inducing, so you're going to have a town filled with often low achieving, depressed people. Think Mare of Eastown. Prison escapes are pretty infrequent, and rare. I would assume though that the town goes on lock-down. The prisoner I would assume would get as far away from the prison as possible though.

Terrible, but that wasn’t necessarily because of the person: https://www.vera.org/in-our-backyards-stories/why-are-there-so-many-people-in-jail-in-scranton-pa

Read about susanville, CA

And watch the pbs doc prison town about it. There was a recent nytimes article saying that the state prison was closing and the town was going to suffer, at least economically.

Op here. Not Lorton it’s close enough to DC that Northern Virginia did not rely on it for jobs, etc but towns where the Prison is the main feature. I’m a native Washingtonian and I wouldn’t count Jessup either and Baltimore.

But small towns. Living near Jessup or Lorton or even the DC jail seems it is a different experience entirely. 🙂

I grew up in Ossining (home of Sing Sing) but didn’t notice it/didn’t impact daily life. A lot of residents work in NYC, etc. so not like a very small town dependent on the prison for its livelihood.

Did you know an Asian kid named Kevin? He was about 18 in 1994. I met him in college and he was from there.

I live about 7 miles from the State Penn. Most of the people who work there have to commute about an hour because housing here is too expensive.

Zero impact except the light pollution.

I grew up in a town that experienced significant decline which started around the time several prisons were constructed there. From a day to day perspective I wasn't impacted but the town's decay compared to its neighbors was evident. Locals attributed the decline of the town with the arrival of the prisons and subsequent increases in crime. Likely there were other factors at play, but I'm inclined to agree that prisons did play a part in redistributing more criminals to the town.

Prison should be abolished.

They will naturally fade away once you abolish crime. It's easy, right?
