Thinking of making the switch from practicing to recruiting or staffing at an agency (not at a firm). I prefer sales to law and I'm tired of reading contracts all day.
If anyone here is a recruiter, could you tell me a bit about your average day? Is compensation 100% commission? How difficult is it to hang your own recruiting/staffing shingle after a few years? |

I’ve done it. Are you a partner? Because partner placements are where the real money is, but unless you were a partner at a big firm, you won’t be able to get that business.
It’s hard. You have to hustle all the time, have a thick hide (because most people will hang up on your cold calls) and it will probably take you at least a year, maybe 2 to build a practice. You also have to be ruthless about which candidates you will work with and not waste time with candidates that aren’t placeable. You’d be better off starting with an established firm because law is a prestige business and with no track record why would any candidates work with you? The good ones can make like a million a year. But like realtors, most don’t. I went back to practicing law because it was easier b |
Good perspective. Was the comp structure at your agency 100% commission? |
