How many kids zoned for Pyle choose magnet?

Anonymous
I'm wondering if anyone knows how many kids or what percent of kids end up choosing magnet (either MSMC or Eastern/Takoma Park) vs going to Pyle?

Is Pyle better?

What are the advantages of Eastern or Takoma Park over Pyle? Disadvantages (other than commute and friends)?

Thanks for constructive feedback!

OP Here -- I know magnet is lottery based, but I'm wondering of those who are offered a spot, how many choose magnet and why. Thanks!

People choose the magnet because the classes are frankly better.

Most go to Pyle. But it varies from year to year. Some magnets offer an 8 period day, or programs the student wants to study. Some go to a middle school magnet and then return in boundary for Whitman.

Everyone I know in the pool for Eastern has at this point been offered a spot. It may be lottery but it’s not been difficult to get an offer.

@PP, I assume you're zone for Pyle? Do you know how many accepted from those you know were offered a spot and rationale for accepting?

It’ll be different this year than before because Eastern added an entire additional class, so many more seats. Last year most kids in the pool did not get offered spots.

If the pool is the top 15% for roughly 8k kids are zoned to a program like TPMS, then the pool is 1200 kids for 100 seats.

Bus and car pool timing and schedule is the deal breaker for most of us.

Kid wouldn’t even make it home for a travel team sport plus the 6am bus and long commute in bad traffics both ways.

Look at the day to day logistics Op.

OP have you seen the bus schedule? When kids see that, it becomes a big reason not to go to the magnet. I think sometimes they pick up around 6am outside Pyle (not in the neighborhood) and you're on the bus for an hour. That has to suck in a very big way.

That's crazy since school doesn't even start until 8:15.

6am feels like hyperbole given that the bus picks up at Whitman at almost 7. chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://www2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/siteassets/schools/middle-schools/a-f/easternms/homepage/magnet-bus-schedule-8-22-22.pdf

We turned down both Eastern and Takoma Park for this reason, plus the friends factor. DS had no interest, but I was wistful about him missing out on the Takoma Park math experience. He would have been a sixth grader during the pandemic year so we wouldn’t have even had to deal with the commute for the start. I know other kids who turned down one or both, but doubt you’ll be able to find stats. We’ve had a great experience at Pyle, so no real regrets.
