Currently working for an agency (new employee), but still slightly unclear on the protocol for outside work that’s unrelated to my day job— e.g., if my federal employment relates to tech and I want to start a side business as a health coach. Would I need to ask the ethics department about this prior to starting the business, and if so, what type of details are necessary? Thanks so much!
Yes, you have to submit an outside employment request which should clearly identify the business and the scope of the business. Good luck! My side hustle is the fed gov and real job is my startup!
Yes, you do. They will tell you what you need to provide.

Another vote for yes. Fully disclose to ethics counsel in writing what you’re proposing and get written approval. Print the email string and file it at home.
It’s a get out of jail free card if you’re found in a conflict of interest situation. They won’t prosecute. |
When my DH was a federal employee (attorney), he considered two side gigs -- (a) tutor; and (b) wedding band member. These two seemed like safe bets.
You need to ask your ethics folks for just about any outside activity.
Always ask ethics. Always
Depends on your agency. At mine I don't have to ask if it's unrelated to employment so if I wanted to start a tutoring or lawn mowing service I don't need ethics approval.
