In mine, the man asks the woman’s father for permission first. Then, he proposes. There is a dowry necessary, too.

It got to a point where I told DH whenever he was ready to propose I'd say yes. He proposed within a year of that talk.

Nowadays fathers say “Don’t ask me, ask my daughter. I want her to be happy. Will you promise to make her happy?” .
