DD12 got her period about a year ago. She was/is uncomfortable using tampons, so she misses a week of swim practice every month. I allowed it since I did not want to pressure her to do something she felt uncomfortable with, but now it’s been a year, summer team is coming up, and this is something she is just going to have to figure out sooner or later.
I’ve been hesitant to try out period swimsuits since they seem to good to be true, and also I’m not seeing any for sale that seem meant for non-recreational swim. Has anyone here had luck with this or can recommend a brand? |
| The cheap ones on amazon don't work. Invest in ruby love or something that do the job. I would say, my daughter left the swim team because of this - she was still not comfortable even with swim underwear. The coach (male) was not sympathetic to her missing practice. |

Has she tried the light tampons? I would keep encouraging her to try them again. A tampon shouldn’t be uncomfortable if inserted correctly.
Until then...this is the sportiest one I’ve seen, but no experience in the performance https://www.knixteen.com/products/period-swim-sport-one-piece-sweet-violet?utm_source=google&utm_medium=sem&utm_campaign=us_sh_pmax_swim_teen_general&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIsJ_x3ICJ_wIVcO_jBx3nUQIGEAQYBSABEgJtHPD_BwE |
| I just ordered some bottoms from KNIX. They were recommended by a friend but my DD hasn't used them yet. She's not on swim team so I just bough a basic bottom and she will wear one of her regular tankini tops with it. They had some styles that might be appropriate for swim team practices. I read some reviews for other brands that said they were good for "light" days. I took that mean they weren't very good. |
| My DD just turned 11 and got her period a year ago in June. I bought the Ruby Love bikini bottoms. She also does year round swim and summer swim. Had no issues with them, she happily wears them when it’s “ that week”. |
| What does she normally use? She prefer to use pads or absorbent underwear? |
|
She normally uses pads. We’ve done the “if it’s in right, you won’t feel it” convo about tampons but she has not changed her mind.
I was thinking we’ll try the period suit. Once she understands she has to go to swim practice either way, she might decide to try tampons. |
| Do you know what kind of period she has? As an adult with heavy period, I still can’t understand how anyone can go swimming while having a period. |
| My 13 year old diver uses period swimwear when she has to, as does her similarly aged friend, who's a swimmer. They're both happy with it, although DD says the way the swimsuit is cut is not the most comfortable (the size that fits around the waist and bottom is tight and uncomfortable on the top). She will not try tampons. |
…there’s these things called tampons. -Former college swimmer who has always had heavy periods. |
What if you’re swimming during that time when you soak through your tampon in 30 mins-1hr (the super plus one) and leak (sorry for the TMI)? I understand that the water pressure prevents bleeding but once you’re out of the water, wouldn’t you have to scramble to the changing rooms? |
| She need a pad and swim diaper? |
|
I'm in my 40s, had 4 pregnancies, with very heavy periods, and have NEVER felt comfortable with tampons. I've never worn them beyond trying unsuccessfully, and I am not bothered by missing swimming, or other sports or activities because of this. I think one's sense of inner comfort - literally! - is much more important than a mere sport. I am perfectly fine with my daughter missing sports when the time comes, if she has a similar experience. She's athletic enough, and we're not on the "sports for college admissions" bandwagon. If she can still practice with period underwear, great. But I suspect nothing works for very heavy period days. At least, that's been my experience.

Ok, but missing a week of sports every month just because of your period is totally unnecessary, and if you are part of a team, not fair to others. I don’t know anyone that refuses to get in the water on their period. Don’t you take your 4 kids to the pool or beach and get in the water with them? |
Not PP but yes. It can be done, however. |
