Chimp Empire, Netflix

Anyone watch this wildly beautiful series?

We like to think we humans are "special" and different, but we're no different than chimpanzees and many other animals. Aggressive males, killing a rival "other" because you can, even if they've done you no harm. Being angry that you're left out and taking it out on women (female chimps) and children. Grieving our friends.

This series was beautiful, but looking at the chimps was like holding a mirror to our own species.

I just watched the first episode. Beautifully done. I want to know how they filmed them since chimps are so incredibly dangerous.

Apparently there have been researchers observing the chimps for years, so they were already used to humans. But the crew never brought food in or partook in the chimp's fruit, so they didn't see them as a threat or competition. And they never intervened in any situation, even tragic ones. They way they were able to follow the chimps in the dense rainforest is really pretty incredible.

Jackson was the Alpha. He couldn't show weakness, or as though he needed help.

Also, here's a great behind the scenes that shows how they filmed it. It's just wild

Is this Gombe, where Jane Goodall's team has worked? I haven't watched the show yet, but is this just an extension of her observations with the same community of chimps?

It's in the Ngogo forest, in Uganda.
