Painting main door

Anonymous
Our house is over a hundred years old and our front door is maybe original? Or at min, it’s very old. It still has a keyhole.

Has anyone had experience stripping and repainting such an old door? I’m handy and have painted plenty of times. It has many layers of paint and they’re not good painting jobs.

It’s cheaper to do so than getting a new one or at least a new one that’s nice and not generic looking.

Is there some major con I’m not thinking of?

Just be aware of lead paint and you may need to add some wood filler to low spots or areas with water damage. Have you thought about a stain?

Thank you! have actually! But I would have to see the quality of the wood first, right? If there are too many low spots to fill, I don’t think it’ll look took good. I’m hoping the low spots I see now are just from chipped layers of paint and will even out once the paint is stripped.

And yes, lead paint check will be the first thing to do.
