2nd grader got denied for AAP. Thinking of applying again next year.
Would you retake the COGAT if the score was 135? Kid is an early August too so don't know if age is a factor with this test. GBRS was pretty good, 2c/2f. |
You can retake? I am the worst parent ever. |
The CogAT score was not the reason your kid was rejected. Taking it again will do nothing to help your case and may perhaps harm it if the new scores are lower.
It's more likely that your kid was rejected because the work samples were bad, the parent questionnaire didn't show them what they wanted to see, iready/DRA scores weren't high, or you just had bad luck with the panel who reviewed your kid. The FCPS system is really dumb. A kid with a 99th percentile CogAT score and a good GBRS should be admitted. |
Where do you get the DRA from? |
Agree with PP at 13:30. DC had > 140 NNAT, COGAT, and WISC (with gifted-range scores across domains) and was denied, we assume due to not having 4COs or maybe something in a work sample. Unless a subscore on COGAT was low (could be a red flag), I wouldn't subject your DC to testing again. We definitely won't. We have some difficult choices on how to support our DC moving forward if our appeal is denied. We aren't sure we can enrich enough to make up for 8h/day of being understimulated. |
They don’t use DRA anymore. In the application packet, was your child listed as having strengths in reading and/or math ? |
The CoGAT was not the reason your child was not accepted. Look at the GBRSs and read those comments carefully. Compare the Consistently to the Frequently and understand what the Teachers are seeing in those areas. |
Strength in reading checked. Do they weigh the iready heavily? 92 R, 93 M. |
Those are solid iready scores. What was cogat quantitative score? Are you at high SES school? |
What does 92 R 93 M in iReady mean? Are you referring to percentiles? I think iReady scores should be 400+. If percentiles, then those iReady aren't that great if you're in the Langley/Mclean pyramids. |
Yes, percentiles for iready. Fairfax area. We feed into WT Woodson. |
Q score was 133. |
It doesn't sound like there's any specific weakness or reason for the rejection, unless the work samples the school submitted were sloppy or otherwise bad. Sometimes, the admissions decisions just don't make sense to anyone. Reapply next year with good work samples and a good parent questionnaire. Make sure you don't say something offputting to the committee members in the questionnaire. Hopefully, the process will work out for you next time. |
Yes, the work samples submitted were pretty bad and then our work samples were even worse. This is my first time applying and I had no clue what to submit. There were even samples from 1st grade that the school submitted. Is that normal? |
Did you parent refer or was he in pool? Also, it is already adjusted for age.
If he wasn't in pool, that definitely means plenty of other kids had higher scores.... |
