Saying so long to a travel sport

Anonymous
Anyone else’s kid moving on from a sport that has defined their childhood? My kid will start HS in the Fall and it’s a great time to make a change and try something new- in a new setting with new kids. But it’s bittersweet for me. I have loved cheering and supporting, and will miss my friendships with other team parents.
I suspect there may be lots of changes on travel teams in the rising freshman age group.

Will you son still play the same sport in HS?

He’s unsure! Depends on the day, and the sports his friends discuss trying out for. Lots of unknowns. I just want him to be busy after school.

Not yet, but I see it coming in the near future as my eldest approaches high school age. I'll miss it, but I'm excited for all the adventures he has ahead!
And I won't miss the traffic on I-95 going to all the tournaments on the East Coast. LOL

Of course not

I cannot believe any parent wouldn’t be jumping for joy over a travel sport ending. It means you have your life back. Stop living through yours kids’ sports. Travel parents are the worst.

I don’t understand why so much travel is needed for travel sports nowadays. This area has a dense population. I grew up in New England and we only had to travel an hour at the most

We did a few years ago. I only missed it for a few minutes. All of the extra time and money really made the sadness dissipate rather quickly.

My son gave up AAU basketball this year, and he is so happy to have weekends back. He is doing a little training and conditioning to stay competitive for the HS season, but he never intended to be recruited by colleges, so it makes sense. Enjoy your weekends OP!

Seems OP is saying so long to travel not to the sport. HS sports can sometimes be more hectic than the travel experience for some people. And plenty of sports still have kids playing travel in the off season

You still don't have to. Recruiters are reviewing video remotely. They may show up for a specific kid they are trying to recruit. However, some will make you believe that kids need to travel for for competition and exposure. Unless you are at the tippy top, your kid will not need that ... even if headed to college. I have watched this play out. In fact last year, I saw one kid not play for the past year and a half due to an injury and he still got an offer to play at a college. Mind blown.

Or happy people. I can't tell you how many friends, co-workers and family members have told me they miss watching their kids play and the bonding time in the car.

I think it's like childbirth, you forget the actual pain of it.

I don't like early morning or drives, but my kids play my sport (I won way more titles/went farther than them--so no vicarious living) and I really love seeing their joy and watching them compete. I sit by myself and I don't yell at refs or go near screaming parents (the part I hate), but I really truly love watching my kids play. One may be playing at a college not too far away and I'm excited to see home games (which will only be a 10 min drive from the house!).

They will find so many new interests in high school, so this is a good thing.

Fingers crossed that is going to be my son . He hasn't played since late September--missed all of Club seasons and high school. But, he is still in touch with some of the coaches. We are hoping he can be seen this summer--but really not sure what he's going to look like or condition by then. Thankfully, the recruit very late in his sport.
