I have a type 1 diabetic and will get a doctors note at his next appointment. I am hoping someone here knows what is a good reason for double time?
TIA |

I'm assuming you're asking for testing.
For College Board and AP tests, they are allowed to have one on one testing with a proctor. They are allowed to stop the test anytime they need to which is why they need to be in a separate room. For regular tests in class we never asked for extra time because she rarely needed it-her teachers were very good about letting her get food if her bs went low. |

Why do you need extra time for being T1?
- T1 of 30 years |
| Diabetes is unlikely to require extra test taking time but probably does need extra/unscheduled breaks. So the total time for test administration will be longer but not more time actually answering questions. If your child needs that, it's because of a different disability. |
| What in the world would you need extra time for? |
| Breaks, yes. Extra time, not happening. |
| They likely won't give you extended time, but may give a 'stop the clock' accommodation that allows the test taker to take needed breaks without losing time. |
| I guess I don’t understand why you need extra anything. Sugar level not controlled? |
|
WTF is with the replies on this thread? T1D of 30 years do you not have up-to-date technologies? Dexcom alarms go off all the time. From growth to stress and puberty the numbers are all over the place.
For obvious reasons, testing needs to stop when they are out of range (either high or low) as cognition is impacted by blood sugar. The stop the clock, allow time to get in range. If you've ever sky rocketed from stress you know that it may take 1 hour to get back in range to continue testing. OP don't listen to the people on this thread. You absolutely should ask for and receive accomodations. |
Every single person person has agreed with you, that a stop clock/extra break accommodation is reasonable. Just not extra time, which is a different accommodation. |
Ime, kids should but don't. |
They absolutely do. I have spent so much time on the phone with College Board tracking down testing sites that will do one on one testing for my kid. |
| Everyone is correct about the college board, but if you are talking about tests/completing assignments in High Schools, extra time is something typically included on 504's for Type 1 diabetics. |
Double time? 100% extra time? My kid has a documented reading and writing disability and very slow processing speed. Plus adhd. Time and a half/50% is the most ever given. There would need to be much more compelling reasons for 100% extra time. Double time could cause some tests to be taken over multiple days, most schools and teachers want to avoid this. Breaks, as needed, makes sense. |
Your question is backwards. If your student needed all that extra time you'd know why they need it. So maybe you'd be asking if X is a good enough reason, but there's no reason to ask generally how you can justify the request. |
