Sex Ed at APS

Anonymous
Good afternoon!

I grew up outside America and I was wondering when students at APS start having Sex Ed. In my country Sex Ed starts in 3rd grade. Girls and boys are separated though we still learn about each other. 3rd grade we talk about puberty and the basics of reproduction. Women have uteruses and ovaries. How a baby grows in the uterus and that an egg from a female and a sperm from a male makes a baby. In 5th grade we learn about intercourse but in a very biological manner. 6th grade and up we learn about feelings, contraception etc. I was wondering how it is done here and what topics are introduced in what grade. I am specifically interested in what is discussed in elementary school as that is the stage we are now in. Thanks so much!

I don't think my kid had any sex ed last year, but that was probably due to some dumb covid thing. My 5th grader had it this year. The kids are not separated by sex and we actually were on vacation so he missed it. They do send out a list of topics but I heard they didn't cover most of them but it discussed puberty, basics of reproduction and STIs supposedly in a biological matter (so not really about sex).

You should get an email from the health teacher before that unit so you can review the specific material covered.

It’s all defined by the state:

4th grade is when it's supposed to happen. In my case, that was when DS was in virtual school.
