Failed Geometry SOL

Anonymous
My DD in 9th grade failed the Geometry SOL. She has an LD but this is the first SOL she has ever failed. She passed Algebra last year and is doing fine in the Geometry class itself (B). The school has not returned my call about what happens next, and I cannot find anything online. Does she need to retake if she passed Algebra last year?

OP again: She passed Algebra I SOL in 8th grade - can't tell whether she needs the additional "verified" credit for Geometry.

She does not. The rule is they have to sit for a math SOL in HS, but if they already got the verified credit in Alg 1, they don't need the verified credit. She's fine.

NP, and I'm pretty sure this is correct. The state requirement is to sit for one math SOL in HS, not necessarily pass one. And only one verified credit is needed in math so Algebra I covers that.

I'm the PP. I teach in FCPS, and my own son went through this same thing last year. It doesn't matter.

Algebra 1 counts as the one math SOL

Does Algebra 1 count if it was taken in middle school and not during COVID? I thought allowing the middle school Sol to count was just a temporary aide and now it’s back to requiring the passing of a math Sol while IN HS (not just in a HS class taken in middle sch).

I have this same question.

I’m a high school teacher and my understanding is the verified credit in math needs to come from an SOL taken in high school. So you can’t use an algebra 1 SOL passed in 8th grade, you need to pass (not just sit- I think that may have been a CoVID exemption like the temporary 350 floor to pass) an SOL in high school.

As for retake- if she scored a certain score (this I can’t remember, I think it’s 385) she may qualify for an expedited retake next week. Otherwise, she will move on to algebra 2 since she’s passing geometry as a class and presumably take the algebra 2 SOL next year.

Passing the Alg 1 SOL in Middle School counts for the verified credit for Math. It's not a temporary covid thing. You have to take a Math SOL while in HS one time for federal participation requirements. So you can pass Alg 1 SOL in 8th grade and have your VC, sit for Geometry or Alg 2 in HS for federal participation (wouldn't matter if it was passed), and be done

Retake range for VDOE is officially 375 and above, but FCPS is allowing 350 and above for retakes as a continuing temporary permission that they've been granted

This is only for high school right? I've not heard of this lower score for retakes at the elementary or middle school level.

Science SOLS are up from last year, today they are taking the Algebra 1 SOL

HS Teacher.

Yes, sorry, the 350 thing is just high school

My DS recently took the Alg 2/Trig SOL in 9th grade. His counselor told hw that he needed to sit for a math SOL in HS, even though he took 2 HS level SOLs in MS. This is Marshall. We have friends at TJ who were told the same thing.

Told the same thing at James Madison - for the verified credit.
