WaPost article on teens and weed

My DS has been hospitalized for cannabis induced psychosis due to strong weed. Looks like he’s not alone. What have we done as a nation? I understand the criminal justice component but our kids will suffer.

It will be the same issue as we have with alcohol. Some kids will overdo it.

It is not legal for under 18 to smoke pot or cigarettes or drink alocohol.

And yet they do.

We have proven time over time making it illegal doesn't stop usage.

That's it.

The pro-Marijuana lobby has done a damn good of promoting the fallacy that weed is harmless to the detriment of our society and our kids. It's unfortunate that the majority of Americans have bought into this scheme. The youth will pay the price for this grave mistake. It's tragic.

The reason why many kids under 18 smoke pot, cigarettes and drink alcohol is because they have adult enablers. Or other people who say, "I did it at their age, what's the big deal?"

If we, as adults, were in lockstep and agreement about holding firm on the laws we have on the books, it wouldn't be an issue.

Why are you allowing your kid to do drugs? Legal or not, kids have always used and its a parenting issue, above anything.

Famous last words.

Geez OP. Was your kid ok? How long did it take him to get better?

I have clinical anxiety and I had some very unpleasant experiences with marijuana. I guess the positive is that it has always been totally unappealing to me even in college. I vividly remember sitting alone in my dorm room feeling terrible and thinking “huh, guess I won’t do this again.”

A friend of mine (also w anxiety disorder) told me that she basically had a brief psychotic episode smoking pot in the 90s.

I can only imagine these episodes will be worse now with stronger weed and highly concentrated THC products.

OP. I didn’t “allow” but he’s 18 and it’s LEGAL. But it’s 10x stronger than I was a teen.

The article states that what used to be 4ml?%? THC is now 40-90 whatever the unit they cite.

For the poster who asked, yes, he’s better but it was scary and months of hospitalization & treatment center - all after smoking vape just once. The hospital said they are seeing more of these cases. I’m so sad for our kids.

Not the same. Beer is always 4-9% alcohol. It’s as if beer would be 40-90% alcohol but taste the same as a Bud.

This happened to a family friend's child. It was about 3 years ago and they were told the teen had an adverse reaction to pot. The teen had to forgo college and is only now starting to take some classes while living at home with supervision. They are not sure their child will fully heal. At the time, no one understood how this happened and we assumed maybe the pot was laced with something. I also saw this article and realize this is likely what happened to their child based on other information they have learned since. Highly recommend everyone read the entire article before they comment. It is easy to blame adult "enablers" but it is truly an issue that people do not realize this isn't the pot from Dazed and Confused and it is now easily accessible and kids don't understand the difference between legal by state law and illegal under federal law.

I remember leaning that weed use before the brain is fully developed (around age 24-25) is actually quite a bit more dangerous in terms of risks of permanent damages. I plan to make sure my kids know this. Sorry that you are dealing with this OP.

It's only legal with a medical prescription card and if he's living in your home, you are allowing it. And, it sounds like he did it prior to 18. Sounds like addiction and drug use run in the family.

You know, recreational weed is legal but I think it’s 21 and over.

OP, what state is recreational weed legal at 18? Did your son get prescription for it for the weed he smoked?

Lol. So many parents think they can control their teen’s every move. Mine got weed from a person he found in Snapchat. He developed psychosis. Luckily I found out about it because he’d forget to lock the door when he left the house in the middle of the night to buy it down the street.

So sorry for your son. You are not alone - I know 2 other teens with weed induced psychosis currently seeking treatment right now. Truly scary.
