My recent college graduate is moving from Virginia to New Jersey.
I want to gift her the car she has been driving. My name is on the title and there is no lien holder. Do I do the title transfer in Virginia or in New Jersey? |
| Carefully check the tax issues which are specific to the state. You want to make sure NJ will not charge extra tax is possible. |
Thanks. So it sounds like I have a choice of where to do this title transfer? |
If her license is still in VA, you can transfer it using the VA address or wait until she has a NJ license if that is better. If she has already transferred her license, than you have to transfer it to NJ. |
| We did this a few years ago and had to pay DC tax (DS had already moved VA to DC). I recall at the time we learned had we transferred while he still lived in VA we could have done so without tax (not sure if it’s a sales tax or transfer tax) but there was an exception for transferred within immediate family. Check out VA DMV website for info. |
