How do these compare? Are they campus dependent? Any experience with Aops Vienna? |
I can’t compare the two. DS is going to be in sixth grade next year and will be taking the Geometry and Pre-Algebra at RSM. We have been there for 2 years and he likes it enough to ask to continue each year. AoPS is too far away and DS strongly prefers in-person to online. |
AoPS Vienna campus has solid math class, we have bad experience with their LA class. |
Could you elaborate on your negative experience with the ELA class in Vienna AoPS? I just posted a question in Classes/ Camps about their Readers Theatre this summer. Thank you. |
Why Geometry before Algebra? If your kid is really ready for a full Geometry class, they might be a better fit jumping right into Algebra, with a little remedial preAlgebra. Without Algebra, the analytic parts of Geometry class might be rough. |
Gifted Math is much easier to teach than ELA (assuming teacher knows the material, which AoPS does.) Math kids can get a lot from books and problems, only need teacher when they get stuck.
I never saw AoPS as being particularly good at ELA, just something they do as an add on for one stop shoppers. |
RSM has a different, multi-year geometry curriculum |
RSM believes that Geometry is not covered in depth enough in the US. They have a separate Geometry track that is 3 years long in order to give Geometry its due. The class is an hour long, instead of the normal 2 hour long classes. They also have it set up so that the Geometry class is held, there is a 15 minute break, and then the Pre-Algebra/Algebra/Algebra II class is held. Many of the kids in 6th grade will take the Geometry and Pre-Algebra sequence and then the Geometry Algebra sequence the following year. There is a separate Geometry that is on grade level for kids who don’t take the longer Geometry sequence. We have friends whose kids have been doing this sequence and they really like it. DS decided he wanted to do it next year so that is what we are doing. |
