I always wanted to get him a backyard with something cool like a wooden play set or fort. How quickly do they age out of these? |
We put one up at age 7 and it was never used
Go for a ninja warrior course, a trampoline, a basketball hoop, soccer goals, etc. |
| Age 7-8 max, but some of those are really small and a 6 year old is too big. I would not get one. |
| Ages 2-7. My 6 year old girl only likes the swing part |
| My 12 year almost 13 year old uses the swing still. |
|
Forget that, it's time to install basketball hoop on the driveway, make soccer goal out of PVC pipes, baseball hitting net....
Kids these days are too addicted to screens and games to enjoy play forts. Save your money. |
| Play yard with monkey bars lasts the longest. Son used then until 11/12, Daughter and friends hung out longer in the house area above the slide. Ate lunch up there until age 12. Bought on Craig's List, used, for $900, sold on Craigs List 8 years later for $500 |
| My experience is they will play on that with friends but not alone. |
| I think my kindergartener would like the fort/playhouse and climbing aspect of this but we don’t need the swings and slide. Any recommendations for something like that that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg? |
| Those are meant for toddlers. |
|
Our house came with one when the kids were entering ES. I figured they would outgrow it quickly. But even at age 10 the boy was doing things like bowling down the slide or turning it into a waterslide with a hose and kiddie pool (do no recommend!). And and the girl at 9 has decorated the top part and collects dandelions with friends to decorate it, or reads a book there.
I never would have bought it in my own, but I'm glad we have it. |
Do you recommend getting one off Craigslist? I’m afraid of the work of disassembly, transport, and reassembling without instructions. |
| Your child has already aged out of it. That is for toddlers. Get a basketball hoop in the driveway or a trampoline in the grass. |

We moved into a new house when my kids were 6 and 4 and I really wanted to get them something like that because they had always wanted one. But my husband discouraged it since there is a playground 2 blocks away from our house and he thought they’d age out of a backyard play set quickly. I was sad about it but agreed. And glad I did because he was right…whenever we go to a friend’s house who has a backyard play set the kids don’t play on it basically at all. Maybe they’ll swing a bit but the fort part and slides are too little. Those things are really made for toddlers.
Now if their friend has a trampoline? All the kids are into that. And they still enjoy playgrounds, especially ones w big climbing structures and monkey bars, just not the little backyard size sets. |
| Get a giant climbing dome instead. |
