Is a mid-20’s couple making $200k ok in DC

Rent is so high and houses are outrageously expensive. Is it possible to save for a house without family help? No student loans and no kids but once kids come, it seems difficult to save anything.

Two 25 year olds with a combined HHI of $200k? You’re fine. It’s okay to start with a condo, TH or something farther out on MARC/VRE.

No you're not ok. But it's not because of your income.

You should be living either with one another, with roommates or both to save money. No living in a 2BR apartment if it’s just the 2 of you living together. 1BR will do.

If you’re working fully remote, consider moving to a cheaper area or doing your work at coffee shops, public libraries & parks.

LOL what are you poor

Most people around here don’t have kids until their 30s, so childcare & housing based on schools doesn’t need to be a factor until then.

Do you think the income you are making as a 25-year-old is what you'll be earning forever?

My husband and I met when we were in our mid 20s. He was looking for his first job out of grad school and was unemployed, and I was making $20k as a PhD student. We are now 40 and own a house that we bought all by ourselves. So yeah, I would consider making $200k in your mid-20s to be just fine.

Maybe it’s because I work from home, but I need a two-bedroom just for me as a single person. I couldn’t imagine two people living in a one-bedroom unless out of absolute financial necessity. How would you not constantly be on each other’s nerves??

You don’t need a two bedroom. I’m one person in a one bedroom who works from home- on the couch with my laptop because I don’t have any more space for a desk. You WANT a second bedroom. You don’t NEED a second bedroom.

This post is ridiculous. $200k in mid twenties and you are worried if you are okay?? You are messed up — seriously messed up.

OK, well I'm 41 so I'm not going to live like a college student anymore. It's not extravagant to want a desk.

Did you not read the second paragraph re: WFH?

You say that you’re struggling financially in the OP, but then say that you need a 2BR apt all to yourself in your mid 20s. That’s crazy. People your age live in group houses or live in 2-3 BR apts—1 person living in each room. But a 2BR apt for one person, living alone?

Of course two people could share a one bedroom, and a bed, if they’re married or in a serious romantic relationship.

Desk goes in your bedroom.
