Are there any local road races (10k, 10 milers, half marathons) that still give out medals to finishers?
DS likes running and did some races but none of them gave out medals to finishers. Is this the current trend? I used to do races a long time ago but stopped due to injuries. Back then even 5k races used to hand out medals to all finishers. I get it that medals are unnecessary (cost, environmental impact, trophy inflation, etc.) and I personally don't need them, but it would be nice if he received something for what would be quite an accomplishment for his age, since he's too young for age group awards. Thanks. |
Rock n roll half marathon has finisher medals |
Army 10 miler |
Just missed it, but the Parkway Classic gives medals for both the 5k and 10 mile |
They give out coins not medals, if it matters |
In the fall (day before the marathon), they do a 1k fun run for 12 and under with medals. |
Umm...all of them give you some type of medal. Anything 10K or longer for sure has bling.

Look at the PR races. Some, but not all have finisher medals. |
How old is your son?
I think it's good to set an expectation that his reward is the snack at the end. ![]() Sorry -- I hate getting medals and I think they are partially responsible for the increase in prices. If you do a small, local 5K, chances are it's to raise funds for a small organization. I think it's great to run for the fun of it and it would never occur to me or my kids that a medal was necessary. I do think if you go for BIG races, like others suggested, you'll be more likely to get a medal. Sometimes they mention that on their website. |
