Help Me Pick a New Crossover <$35k + Bells & Whistles

In the market for a new, super compact/very small crossover, SUV or hatchback. Must be peppy and reliable with as many safety features and extras available at this price point - remote start, upgraded speakers/sound system/XM Radio, heated seats, leather trim, etc.

My current car is a Mazda CX-5, in the top trim level, which is only a few years old and going to DH to replace his CR-V. I've been pretty happy with the CX-5 but looking for something a bit smaller for daily, local driving I'm considering the CX-30, but so far also looking at the KIA Seltos, Hyundai Kona(N) and the Volkswagen Taos. I'm open to all makes and models (perhaps even certified pre-owned?) and would love to hear experiences and recommendations.

At the end of the day, I need a car that's affordable, well-equipped and fun to drive for shuttling my kids around and running errands in as much comfort as our budget allows.

I have also been cross-shopping subcompact crossovers but my max budget is slightly higher than yours.

The Mazda CX-30 Turbo Premium Plus would be my top choice in your price range although it is at the very top of your budget and will probably go a little over once you add every option (and will definitely go over once you add taxes and fees). The non-turbo and lower trims are also solid options, but you will have to compromise on something (HP and/or options).

I also test drove the VW Taos and liked it due to its interior space, but it has a lot less HP than the CX-30 Turbo or Kona N, and its safety ratings gave me some concerns. Of your list, I would rank it at the bottom (and C&D, R&T, and CR would, too), but it could still be worth a look.

I did not test drive the Hyundai Kona N or the new Kia Seltos but they are solid options for your criteria and budget.

Some additional options to consider:
- Volvo XC40 (probably pre-owned if you want it nicely equipped within your budget or you could search out a new Core trim far from the DC area)
- Mazda3 hatchback (but its seats are not as comfortable as the CX-30’s)
- VW Golf GTI
- Kia Soul
