What are your travel regrets?

Looking back, things that you wish you'd done while you had the chance?

I wish DH and I had taken the hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia. At the time (15 years ago), it was $200 per person and we balked at the cost. We could afford it, just got a little too penny pinching.

Missing Gorilla trekking in Rwanda for a similar reason -- I was there for a summer after college and the $500 permit at the time seemed out of my budget. Planning a potential trip back with DH and now it is many multiples of that.

I regret that I get sick on every trip. Last trip was April of 2022 and in wanting to spend time with relatives I hadn't seen in years I stayed in someone's home that was too warm for me. Wound up with a migraine and couldn't attend a dinner with a ton of relatives (who I also hadn't seen in years or in some cases, decades).

That I can't stay longer on a lot of my trips! I currently get only 10 vacation days per year at my job.

My husband won (thru work) a trip for two on a South Africa safari. We had no kids at the time, but the trip was my first week of 1L of law school. I was afraid I was going to fail out if I missed the first week of school, and I didn’t go.

Mine mainly have to do with being cheap when it comes to accommodations and then regretting it when I’m there and wishing I had upgraded. We never spend that much time in our hotel rooms, but there’s something about waking up in a plush room with a gorgeous view that we just can’t get enough of.

Our next vacation I splurged on both of our accommodations and I’m really looking forward to it!

Most recent - didn't make a point to see a shoebill stork on safari in Uganda.

Not studying abroad in college, mainly. I think that might have been a great experience AND changed some of my early adult priorities. No regrets: I love my life now and path though.

We skipped flamingoes in the Yucatan. As a birder, I feel ya PP.

I was traveling around Europe when I was in my 20s and had booked a stay in Krakow but changed plans to meet a friend in Amsterdam instead. Had already been to Amsterdam many times, have still never made it Poland.

Not going to Southeast Asia before I had kids. Don't know when I will do it now. Relatedly, not taking time between college and law school to travel.

Same but it really wasn’t in my budget, and I was partially caught up with a boyfriend at the time, it seems very fun and I hope to encourage DD to.

I was living in Dubai at the time. Planned a trip to Syria. Got visa and then a mini diplomatic spat with the US had friend in State telling me don't go. Went to Turkey instead. A year later, things had calmed down, I got the visa, trip planned, then unexpected and fantastic job offer popped up. Had to cancel trip. Half a year later the civil war broke out and destroyed so much of what I'd been planning to see. Oh well. Poor Syria.

In both cases it really was a question of a week. Had I booked a week earlier, I'd have seen Syria.

Are you me? Wasn’t keen on leaving my boyfriend I also assumed I couldn’t afford it, but I think I should have at least explored it and figured out if I could make it work

There were a few times that I was planning travel with friends when I was single and then something would happen that made it all fizzle out. Someone couldn't go, someone lost interest and then I didn't go. I should have said see-ya and gone solo.
