High school sports starting August?

Anonymous
My rising 9th grader is interested in cross country at Blair. I see the season starts in early August, long before school starts. We’re on vacation until August 20. Does that mean missing the chance to get on the team for the fall season?

Have her reach out to the coach & ask.

Email the coach and athletic director and ask. many of them have spring training in August.

Just for future reference there is actually training starting right after July 1 for returning kids. If you want your kid in HS sports, the summer Isn’t yours.

As for tryouts and practice, depends on the school and coach as to whether they will allow your son to participate. Also make sure that the physical is done timely. That can also disqualify him. There was s a required form and you can’t deviate. This stuff is all on the school website.

Well high school sports are out for us then. Summer swim takes up until almost the end of July - more summer sports will take away our only time to visit family overseas.

If your child wants to be good at XC, they need to run all summer following the schedule the coach provides. The top kids do xc/indoor track/outdoor track & run 30+ miles/week year-round, taking 2 weeks fully off after each season.

If your kid doesn’t care about running in all the invitationals, being on the states team or winning medals & trophies ignore the above.

Quite a decision to make on behalf of your high schooler. You mention swimming, but in xc/track most kids don’t start until 9th grade, so there’s still potential for athletic recruiting. Not to mention the social, academic & exercise benefits of taking part in high school sports. Oh, and having activities to put on a college application.

Guessing you’re going to tell your kid no to getting a summer job, too.

Yeah, that's a big hard pass on Fall sports then. My kids play travel summer sports and that is a priority over training.

Let me ask. Do winter and spring sports require training to start 2 months ahead of time too? Are you not allowed to play more than one sport at a school.

There’s no reason summer travel sports should preclude training except for those times that a kid is actually traveling, which isn’t all the time. Your kids are going to be expected to do more and more strength conditioning and sport-specific training as they get older, and, yes, some of that will be in season. Winter and spring sports also have summer programs and have for decades.

If you plan to stay in MCPS, the good news for you is that high school sports are only half a notch above rec league. If your kid is good enough to play high-level travel, high school coaches will welcome your kid onto the team regardless of whether your kid was a full participant in the summer program. Reach out and show up when you can and everything will be fine.

But don’t be that parent who complains about the commitments outside of the season because that alone could keep your kid off the team.

If your kid is not swimming club they can miss some summer swim.

Another reason why you shouldn’t necessarily wait to do fun travel until your kids can form solid memories, as so many on here advise! Because if you have a HS athlete, that will really limit you.

Winter sports has required practices over winter break so you have to plan around that.

I'd be happy for my kids to get more exercise, but they make these sports so unpleasant by making it so you can't do other ECs or interfere with family vacations. It's not like these kids are going pro. Why do they take themselves so seriously?

FYI, If your kids are looking to be recruited to play a sport in college, they need to participate in their high school varsity team too. Can’t just do one or the other. College coaches care about that, especially in Basketball, because it shows that you’re a team player among other attributes.

An exception would be if it’s a travel soccer league that prohibits playing on the hs team or a sport your high school doesn’t offer.

Most kids at public high schools aren’t traveling the world all summer.
