Dog (30lbs) was spayed and they sent her home with 0.9 Metacam for two days. I asked them to increase to 5-days worth and some sedatives (ace + gaba every 12 hours) so she will rest (super active).
How is Metacam once a day adequate pain management for spay recovery? It seems crazy that is sufficient. Thanks for any insight. |
| My vet sends my dogs with a week's worth. |
| Did you go to your regular vet or a spay clinic? One way the clinics keep costs down is giving out less drugs. |

I should re-phrase, regardless of how many days, how is one dose of an NSAID/per day adequate for an animal post-spay?
I read the article linked below and it made me feel better - but I know humans need a whole lot more than an anti-inflammatory after most surgeries. In our case, 24 hours post op, puppy is sleeping well, feeling more like running (I won't let her though), eating and drinking. TLDR - Meloxicam (metacam) is adequate to control pain post spay. https://www.theveterinarynurse.com/research/article/does-meloxicam-provide-adequate-pain-management-as-a-post-operative-analgesic-in-canine-ovariohysterectomy-patients |
| Did you have to use the cone for her? We have a spay scheduled this week, and I'm worried about her licking at the incision, especially overnight while we're sleeping. |
Get her a post surgery suit from amazon |
I have been by her side all day so I observe her, but at night I have a comfy cone (vs plastic) which she still hates. But make her wear something, a cone, donut style cone, (or the suit mentioned above) -- not worth the worry. I had a little scare today after getting lax on it. I feel guilty because she's miserable but better than dealing with an infection. I might look at a suit since they say to keep them away from the site for 7-14 days. comfy cones are on chewy, petsmart, etc but here is their main page. you weave their collar through it so they can't get it off (maybe yours won't be so feisty). https://allfourpaws.com/comfy-cone/ |
| My dog was on pain meds for one day after his neuter. He had a weaker bladder while on them, so we stopped them and he was perfectly fine. |
