Want to pull our large microwave hood

I want to pull the microwave hood combo in our new house and replace it with a proper hood since the range is a very nice new gas one (I know…I’ve heard about how I’m dying and killing my children and pets in the process). I don’t think having a microwave over the range is practical or safe and it means the one appliance my kids can use relatively safely is literally out of reach. How small a microwave can I get away with, if I don’t pull out a cabinet and place it there instead? We mostly just reheat individual portioned leftovers and microwave popcorn. I don’t cook large quantities very often in it (maybe when warming things for holidays?).

I don't know about your microwave, but congratulations on installing a real exhaust hood! A true essential.

You're venting it out the roof, right? It's the only way to go. Don't go to all the trouble of getting rid of your microwave just to install a filtered recirculating fan that doesn't get rid of the exhaust.

It vents to an external wall right now.

You can get one as small as you like. The people who buy your house will rip out the kitchen anyway.
