Looking to stay in Algarve for couple nights-any of you stayed at Pestana Viking or Palm gardens? Or a different one?
Also, is this region accessible by train from Lisbon? |
|
We stayed in Tavira— my impression is it’s slightly less crowded maybe because you take a boat to the beach or maybe they just haven’t built as many hotels (or maybe I’m off).
You need to check the train situation— IIRC there is good service to some towns but ithers require switches/buses. |
| The Algarve is a cheap package holiday destination for drunken Brits. Is that what you want? |
and Germans. My gawd. The drunken singing and loud noises late at night. Stay away from Lagos. We left early there and drove west. Found a tiny seaside fishing village and stayed there. Oh, and DH is a Brit, and even he couldn't stand Lagos. |
Not everywhere fwiw |
Yes everywhere. Why go to the Algarve when you can just go to Cancun? Seriously, it’s the same. |
Weird that you’ve been everywhere in the Algarve when you hate it so much? |
| OP here: Not sure about the Algarve haters but if we wanted to spend couple days in a nice beach resort where would that be? SO amy options-looking at Hilton/Pestana etc.. |
| I love Cascais! Its very walkable, easy to get to from Lisbon, and there are excellent restaurants (cheap too). But I have never been to the Algarve. |
Not at all. It’s just so trashy and small that it’s reputation precedes it. Like Cancun. But have fun OP!! |
| My family spent a week in the Algarve near Benagil Beach in a rental home. It was beautiful and not overbuilt. |

We've stayed in both Burgau and Sagres and enjoyed both. Going earlier in the summer is better than later when all of Europe is on holiday. In both places we rented (scored a villa in Burgau as DH explained to leasing agents that it was better for them to make some of the preferred price than none [early in summer season so not many tourists yet]).
This was a few decades ago, so confident much has changed (though Algarve was, as is now, a preferred location for Northern Europeans and Brits). We rented a car as DH always wants maximum optionality. Curta a vida! |
Tavira is so lovely. |

Some of these posters are confusing parts that are not the algarve. I don't know how you could say it was trashy. We stayed at pine cliffs and it was spectacular. |
Please stay off the travel boards if you have nothing but smug ignorance to contribute |
