I ride the MARC train from Frederick to DC three times a week. This is fairly new to me and it's very different from riding the metro for 15 years when I lived in DC.
People have formed groups and sit together, hooting, hollering, and yelling the entire time. They talk on the phone on speaker. They put their feet on the seat when the signs clearly say not to. Just this morning, I got on the train and two women were talking as they were getting on. Fine, I sat away from them but they decided to sit away from EACH OTHER (about 5 rows) and continue their conversation. WHAT??!!! Then a woman right next to me starts to listen to something on her phone without the headphones and stuffs the phone in her hoodie so she can nap while we all listen to her phone. Was it always like that? Have people lost all manners on public transport post-pandemic? |
| I would lose my mind in the scenarios you just described. People do, in fact, suck. |

Agree this sounds awful. It looks like from this that MARC is supposed to have a quiet car - does it?

Glad it's not just me. I usually try to sit in the quiet car and you'd think they wouldn't do it on there but they still do. |
IT does and I try to sit in there but a woman was on a conference call (no headphones) on there too the other day. Another one was watching YouTube. It's just non stop. The conductors told me I have to talk to the people myself first. I hate to get into it with people all the time though. |

Sorry, OP.
I was a regular VRE rider pre-pandemic, and can’t say I encountered that. Always found it much quieter/calmer than metro. |
| That's crazy to hear about the quiet car. I rode the MARC for a while (different line though) and people were SAVAGE in the quiet car. As in, if anyone spoke or made noise the other riders would lord-of-the-flies them. It was amazing. Maybe you just got the quiet car on a bad day and you could try again? |
| I mostly ride the metro with DC high school kids and find the MARC trains a utopia! |
Plenty of Gonzaga kids on MARC but honestly they are amazing. Never had an issue with any of them. It's all of the adults who are insufferable. |
| Put in your noise cancelling headphones. |
Sure, I do most of the time, but that assures I can't read then and sometimes I can still hear them. |
