Yet another OD at ACHS according to the police scanner. |
2 ODs at school this week so far. 1 dead. Tragic, but I don’t think can blame schools, bigger forces at work. |
Is it true that a student overdosed at school and died? My understanding was there was an OD on campus requiring medical intervention and that another student passed away off campus earlier in the week (cause unknown other than cardiac arrest). |
True. |
The student did not die on campus, unless they moved ACHS to South Whiting St and didn’t tell anyone.
Anyway, shame on y’all for trying to blame the school system for something that’s clearly a failure of society as a whole. |
Can someone post Balas' email or a news link? |
Both emails are in the new superintendent thread |
While you are correct that this is a failure of society (and the parents), ACPS does deserve part of the blame. It's now well documented that the school shutdowns caused a massive mental health crisis for school kids. There is a clear link between the self medicating drug use (and the violence) and the school shutdowns. ACPS stayed closed to kids longer than most districts. Even then school board member Ramee Gentry, in one of the few times she challenged Hutchings and central office, said that ACPS' reopening plan was behind, subpar and embarrassing. ACPS deserves some blame here. |
This student’s issues did not occur because school buildings were closed. This world is a trash heap, between the regression into fascism, the environment literally on fire and the rich richer than ever while the rest of us fight for scraps. Schools are not and should not be the #1 factor in a child’s mental health. No other developed country has such a laughable safety net as ours; throw in easy access to drugs and guns and it’s a wonder more people aren’t dead. This forum is a godawful pit. |
What is the link to the police scanner? |
What does the city do? As far as I am concerned, both the city and ACPS do a poor job of addressing youth programming and interventions. There are tons of federal and state grants, foundation grants, and private-partnerships (hello, Amazon!) with funding to provide for positive youth development programs and interventions and resources. Why not partner with Inova Children's or Virginia Hospital Center or Children's? Why not have a partnership for youth sports with ASA or Little League or AAU basketball or NCAP swimming? George Washington University operates a community counseling in the Caryle neighborhood and Neighborhood Health has tons of programming. But what is the city or school division doing? |
Agreed.
MS-13 members love after school sports. |
