Flying to Europe later in June. Have a very busy first day, including a late night affair that evening. Can't get out of it. I'm dreading it because I know I rarely sleep well on planes and will be shattered by 7 or 8 PM. Nor is there much time for an afternoon nap after landing.
I've never taken sleeping pills but I'm contemplating it. But does anyone have suggestions for getting a solid night's sleep insofar as possible in cattle class? |
| If you take pills, do a trial run (or several) before leaving. I tried OTC pills once on a flight and I was a mess. Couldn’t sleep, couldn’t stop moving, loopy, jittery…not a good time. I just stayed awake the entire flight back. |
| Have you tried melatonin? Benedryl is also a good option. Test both at home to see how you do. |
| Dh, DS (10), and I all do Melatonin. Try out dosages beforehand and also try out the length of time you will be sleeping. We take smaller doses when flying to London because we are probably only going to get 5.5 hours of sleep. |
| How long is your flight? You do not want to take sleeping pills on a short flight. |
| xanax 30 minutes before take off |
+1 that is a magic pill for sleeping on flights |
| You might also consider Dramamine if it makes you drowsy |
| Tylenol pm |
DC to UK overnight, plus 2+ hour layover and a hop to Amsterdam. Day pretty much booked from the moment we land. |
| Sorry, it’ll suck, but you’ll live. The flight to UK isn’t long enough to get decent sleep even with a pill. Just power through. |

I take Ambien ( prescription) on a flight to England. I give DD now 10 melatonin. We go once a year. We both take it when we get on the plane and tell the flight attendant we don’t want snacks or breakfast we just want to sleep. That gets us about 6/6.5 hours. Not a full nights sleep by any means but enough to rally the next day and function.

| Drink the wine! I drink it and it seriously makes you go to sleep. Something about alcohol and altitudes. I also take a sleeping pill just for good measure. Wear a sleep mask. |
| Pills will make you feel worse. Power through. Close your eyes. It will calm your mind and reduce stimulation. |
| You can go into an ultra low energy state during that Heathrow layover and it helps. |
