Paying for Swim Meet Fees separately

Anonymous
If your team does NOT roll meet fees into the general team fees, can you give me an idea of how expensive meet fees are when you pay for them separately? When I look in the meet announcments, it appears to be about $10 per swimmer and another $10 or $15 per event. So if my kid swims a full meet (6 or 7 events usually), we are looking at about $120 or so in fees per meet?

It will vary from meet to meet, but that’s about right. There’s a flat surcharge per swimmer then an additional fee for each event. I like it because I have a kid who only does about two meets per year, 2-4 events per meet, but I can see how it adds up for a kid who swims more.

That's about right. It also includes relays, too.

OP here. I have three swimmers who all swim 6 or 7 events each. This is going to be a big change!

I have three swimmers too and they swim 6-7 events per meet and about a meet per month. Some months it is over $300 in meet fees. Opens tend to be half the cost of a meet hosted by a club and some clubs are more expensive in the meets they host than others.

Pre-Covid, our club included meet fees in the dues. Now, it is a separate fee and adds at least another $500 per year. Makes sense for the club because lots of kids would sign up for the meet and then not swim. Now, if you sign up and don't show up - its your money not the club's money. Meet fees are not insignificant.

I have three kids and I pay over 2k a year in meets fees. Next year starts travel meets so it will be a lot more.

I just looked and my most expensive month was $400 in swim meet fees. There were two meets that month.

Two kids. Easily $2000 in meet fees. But both travelled this year and one went to Zones.

Wow am I grateful for where I live! I just checked and meet fees for October - March were $370 total for 1 kid, including coach fees and going to regionals.

I think a lot of parents don't pay attention to the meet costs. There are some clubs that pay the fees, but more clubs are passing it on to the parents and it is significant. Probably upped the profit margins significantly for the clubs.

Our club switched over to not including meet fees during Covid. It seems like they must be making a lot of money off of meets now. Where is all that money going? Almost all meet positions are volunteer. We already pay the coaches. The facility rentals are no where near what they make for a meet are they?

It seems really off that I pay $100 for my kids to swim in a meet, then have to volunteer the whole time.

That is cheap- I spent over $1500 one year for one swimmer…. They add up.

The craziest thing is that despite these fees, the host doesn’t make much money off the meet. At least not compared to money making behemoths like soccer, volleyball, and lacrosse tournaments. USA swimming officials will have their kids’ entry fees waived, lodging if they need it, and then they get some meals and snacks, but no pay. Parent volunteers aren’t paid either. I’ve been to meets where they charge for heat sheets and spectator admission, but even so, those meets don’t bring in the kind of revenue a big volleyball tournament does.

How much money does a meet generate? Serious question. A one day meet would have three sessions of 350 kids. I estimate it is about 40k.
