I met three Kindergartners from three different schools and none of them can read beyond CVC words, more than three-quarters of the way into the year. Their parents say they get a lot of Chromebook time. WTF? I thought these schools were supposed to be well-funded and good. |
It’s not the teacher’s fault if kids show up to K not knowing letter names and sounds, and the amount of kids that describes has gone up exponentially since Covid. I know for a fact that the amount of PALS and reading intervention these kids get is insane.
Most kids in affluent elementary schools that went to good preschools are far beyond CVC by the end of K. Your sample size of three says more about the families than the school. |
Cats out of the bag! Take a closer look at the current reading curriculum used in the county (being replaced next year). I’ve got a 5th grader who suffered the fate of it. I’ve been warned about it from his previous teachers to his current tutor who all teach in LCPS. Don’t even get me started about the reliance and daily screen time on his Chromebok. The county is a mess! We over out here and have put two kids through elementary and have seen so many families move to get out of the county. It’s a shame! We were all sold a bill of goods about how great the education here is. It is not. |
What are you prattling on about? Sounds like your kid can’t read and you think that’s the school’s fault. Good luck to you. |
OP, you do know that lots of places (including FCPS) used or use Lucy Calkins right? Yes they are all moving away from it now but LCPS was hardly unique. |
FCPS never used Lucy Calkins to teach reading, only writing. |
That’s developmentally appropriate |
For what IQ range? |
Two things can be true:
1. You never judge an entire school system by observing just 3 kids. That's just entirely dumb and puts into question all of your critical thinking ability. 2. LCPS has never had the test scores and general reputation of FCPS or other better-known public school systems in the DMV, such as MCPS in Montgomery County, MD. |
If you're going to judge a school system's quality by that single data point, okay.
Ultimately the real measure is how well an individual school educates your individual child, in multiple areas, over time. If you don't like the school(s), there are lots of neighboring districts where you can move. |
LCPS has more acceleration in math in middle school than Fairfax. Far more kids get algebra in 7th grade, but this might be an easier algebra than elsewhere.
I haven't followed what LCPS does in kindergarten. It is definitely more advanced than my kindergarten, where the teacher said by the end of the year they will be able to read 50 words. |
These are affluent kids (HHI $300-500k) who went to expensive, high-quality preschools. |
Good to hear that the curriculum will be replaced next year. At least these kids will be given a chance in 1st |
kids in scandinavian countries don't learn to read until 2nd grade. Chromebook use is not age appropriate in K though. |
My kid is also in Kindergarten and can read very fluently despite being the youngest in his class (summer bday and not redshirted) and knowing only letter sounds when he started school. All credit goes to his teachers and school. We do very little at home other than nightly reading. We are in PWC and I was shocked that LC, which is a wealthier district, produced such poor outcomes. |
