I know the east end schools, but what about Tucker? Is it at Hammond? IF you don't want to go to JH or PH for middle, do you go to GW and Hammond? |
East End schools feed into GWMS, West End schools feed into Hammond. Tucker Elementary area (including Cameron Station) are West End so Hammond for middle school. |
If we're zoned for JH do we have to file an official transfer to GWMS? Or do we just register for GWMS? |
You can opt out of J-H for middle school at GWMS.

Right but I can't figure out how. The only transfer page deals with elementary school transfers. Calling has gotten me nowhere. |
I would email the school registrars at both J-H and GW. Contact info found here.

My kids are now in college. Went to Tucker, Hammond and then ACHS (graduated the last year it was called TC Williams). Also, because there was a weird (now rectified) issue with foreign languages, My kids did one year at GW. Tucker is zoned for Hammond. Our entire family actually preferred Hammond to GW, but both were fine. This board is filled with some intense ACPS bashers, but please take it wuth a grain of salt and try talking to actual humans rather than just this board. We had had a good experience, our kids got a great education, made friends, did fun activities, and are now doing well at college. |
If you live right on the boundary for Hammond and GW, then check with your neighbors and the ACPS. In the past, they used to be flexible in allowing families to select which one but not sure if that is still true today. |
You can find this link on the ACPS website: https://croppermap.com/alexandria/
In the Layers menu on the left, you can switch from elementary to middle school. This tool does not include a boundary for Patrick Henry K-8 middle school, but I assume it is the same as the elementary boundary. For both Patrick Henry and J-H, you can choose to attend the K-8 or the larger middle school (Hammond for Patrick Hendry, and GW for J-H). 5th graders enroll in middle school via their elementary school counselor. If you have a 5th grader at J-H and want to attend GW for middle school, you should have already communicated this to your school counselor (since middle school enrollments have already been processed). There are many J-H students enrolling a GW. It's not complicated. |
Clearly it is complicated with questions from so many. So no transfer paperwork even though ACPS calls it a transfer? Fwiw, there were only about a dozen JH 5th graders at the GWMS open house on their day. |
Just email the registrars from both schools as suggested above. They are responsive and will let you know if there’s any paperwork required. |
You haven't had a kid in middle school in ACHS in seven years? I'm glad you and your children had a great experience but do not try to diminish current and recent parents' lived experiences. |
I'm not really understanding your frustration. Have you told your child's counselor to register them at GW for middle school? Because that's how it works. If you haven't, then you will need to talk to the GW registrar, because the deadline has passed for elementary school counselors to submit enrollment info to the middle schools. |
