Intel on Latin in HS

I know the middle school is excellent but I have heard the HS is small. Any thoughts?

Our experience at the Latin high school has been excellent. Better even than the middle school! And there are at least a few trans kids in the HS. I have not heard of any issues but I'm not a parent of a trans kid so I wouldn't be sure what to look out for.

My observation as a parent of a Latin grad is that the HS was very welcoming to trans students. There was at least one in my DC's class. (Remember, each grade is about 80 kids).

Our experience with Latin Upper School has been great—even better than middle school. There are some really top-notch teachers there and the small grade size is very comfortable, if you’re that kind of kid. (My kid is.) Some of the most visible, successful kids at the school are trans or non-binary.

Latin HS tracks kids and it seems to be that the tracking somehow falls along race lines. So, I guess it matters what your race is to determine whether Latin HS is the right place.

This is really not that big a mystery in a city where socioeconomic status largely tracks race lines as well.

The only solution must be to let kids who are below grade level take "AP" and "advanced" classes, 'cause equity? We have an entire school system that already does that. Can we please have a small number of schools that actually demand academic excellence and group kids based on what they have accomplished by the time they hit HS?

Might I add the school is very flexible about who can take honors classes and they also meet kids where they are. The school is small enough to be able to give all kids what they need and provide a roadmap to improvement and success for all of them.

Latin is catering to white UMC PARENTS WHO DON’t want to pay for private school. We all know that. And they will use the new $ they get for having some seats set aside for disadvantaged kids to continue to funnel support and money into those things that that allow the white UMC crowd to believe they are at a private school. It is disgusting, actually. And immoral of Latin.

According to my daughter who has been in honors and AP classes during her time at Latin (and btw she is black), those classes have been pretty diverse.

The reality is that many of the highest-performing Latin HS students still leave for Walls. You get roughly 20 students capable of making it to the most highly competitive colleges in any given class of Latin students, and more than 100 from a Walls class. Unless a high performer is very happy at Latin socially, it's not necessarily worth staying if Walls is an option.
