Why does Spelman cost so much ?

Anonymous
I know this is a niche school (HBCU) and hope to get some serious answers before the racists come out, but why is Spelman so expensive? I think my DD would thrive at Spelman but it costs so much money. Why? It's not ranked particularly high, nationally. I understand it's the #1 HBCU but my goodness she could go to higher-ranked PWIs for less. What is driving the cost???

Do we suck it up and pay or save our money and send her to a PWI (the only other HBCU that interested her were Howard (too close to home) and FAMU (we will not pay to send her to FL. She applied without our knowledge and got in).

Because women don’t tend to earn as much money as men, and Black people tend to earn less than white people, so there’s less alumni money to pay for scholarships.

I'm guessing its endowment might make a difference.

"Sitting on a $570 million endowment, as of June 2021, Spelman is one of the richest HBCUs in the country, but still trails other elite women’s colleges like Mount Holyoke, Smith and Wellesley colleges, which have endowments in the billions." Roughly $48,500/year. I know it's not Ivy costs but that's high to us considering it's not a top ranked school.

$48,000 all in. By contrast my slac (which was bery diverse) Is now $81k a year so SpellmAn seems a great deal to me.

It’s $45,000 a year, including room and board, for what is essentially a small LAC. Many similarly ranked LACs are hitting $80k. Cost is very reasonable for small private schools— and least comparatively.

But is your SLAC in the top?

My DD goes to Spelman, it's close to $50K/year. That is just to the school. Doesn't include the money we send to DD and travel to and from.

Sadly that’s not too expensive for a small private SLAC.

It costs a lot of money to run a college.

Spelman is not even close to expensive in today's world. Top SLACs and even some Ivies can't compare to its outcomes for black women. As someone mentioned, their endowment is lacking which makes it even more impressive.
