Magnet Admissions 2023-2024 (End of the Lottery?)

Anonymous
This lottery which began during the pandemic for CES and MS magnets was supposed to end this year. MCPS hasn't been forthcoming as to what's next was curious if anyone had any idea.

If you had a method to secretly pick which kids can go to magnet and not have to justify it to anyone, would you give it up?

The pool isn't secret and although the lottery isn't all that transparent, I mean it's not televised, as a TPMS parent I can assure it's pretty random who got in.

Lol yeah right. You’re basing your assumptions on who ultimately accepted the offers. Would be veeeery interesting to see who got first round offers before anyone declined.

Safe bet they're kids within the pool which is within the top 15% of their school locally normed. For a low-farms school that would be in the top 5% nationally based on the data MCPS released.

The problem with the lottery is the kids that need these programs the most are likely not selected. Sure, it can happen but more often than not doesn't.

This. MCPS abhors transparency.

I’d say most of the kids in the lottery pool need it the most. A
The kids in my DC’s class (moderate SES) who were selected for ELC were the top 3 percentile, along with a couple others. The standards at our school were surprisingly high—am thankful for this.

Both my kids were selected under different systems. There’s no doubt in my mind and that of their teachers they needed this program and were right for it.

I think that's the point?
