Kudos to the child for reporting it. What I don't get is.. this officer pled guilty in 2018 to sexual solicitation, and did prison time for armed robbery. How was this person still allowed to hold a job as a security officer? How would that get through a background check?

Yet another reason not to have these guys in schools. Ugh.

Security is different than SROs - they are independently hired by MCPS. Which IMO is even worse that he wasn't properly vetted by MCPS.

My kid goes to this school.

How could mcps hire this person? Aren't they finger printed? Wouldn't they have known his background?!

When I go to my kid's MCPS school and go in like I was invited to read to my DD's class, then they scan my driver's license in some computer thing and print out a name tag. I assume I'm getting a basic check done on me as part of that.

Given this security guard was convicted of robbery 15+ years ago, how did that not show up on his background check... unless they intentionally overlooked it? And how did his conviction for sexual soliciting not come up? It's like MCPS is utterly incompetent if they can't even keep out convicted sexual offenders from serving as security guards.

Google his name.

The first result is the article where he was interviewed about his prison time. This was far worse than not doing an indepth background check. The most rudimentary Google search wasn't even done.

HEADS SHOULD ROLL over this!!

And by the way, there's a linked in Varvie Daughtry listed as a Childcare Worker in silver spring by the same name! Same guy??

WTH are the procedures? At my church, and at Scouts, they never allow one adult to be alone with a child. I assume this is happening throughout MCPS?

No heads will roll. It's MCPS.

We had almost the same thing happen a few years ago. An MCPS security guard, this time was having sex with a student:
https://wjla.com/news/local/former-security-guard-at-md-high-school-sentenced-for-sexual-relationship-with-student

And... Google his name and find this New York Times article from 1994 where he was drunk and pistol-whipped an exotic dancer:
https://www.nytimes.com/1994/03/15/nyregion/police-sergeant-is-arrested-in-a-beating-at-a-store.html

So.. MCPS background checks didn't turn up details published in... the New York Times? How public doses this stuff have to be to show up in their background checks?

Hello, The public schools are allowing this INTENTIONALLY. They aren’t incompetent at all. Keep complaining while they do nothing about it. They’re laughing at everyone who thinks it’s incompetence.

I remember this story done a few years ago and thought of it immediately when I saw this thread. It’s insane that no changes were out in place to the hiring process to prevent this from happening again.

MCPS really and truly doesn’t care about keeping our kids safe. That much is obvious.

Awesome, we are zoned for Wood Middle School.

Kudos to the kid for reporting this. I think that would be difficult to do for a 13 year old kid.

This is actually why we NEED to have SRO because they are hired by the government and are vetted police officers. MCPS hires these security officers and obviously even with the BLOATED central staffing, they can't even hire former sex offenders. It's disgusting

If I were a principal I'd do my own background checks on everyone, checking the court records and googling them.

To chaperone my middle schooler's Busch Gardens instrumental music event, I HAVE TO GET A BACKGROUND CHECK AND FINGERPRINTS, and do child abuse and neglect training.

What about this guy who works in a school on a daily basis?!!!? We need some sort of class action lawsuit on all the sexual assaults that have happened in MCPS, with all of us parents as plaintiffs, and accuse MCPS of knowingly creating an unsafe environment for our children.
