I always overbuy summer clothes for DD. She’s 12 this summer and really into clothes, but I have vowed not to overbuy this year.
She’s pretty much set on shirts since most things from last year still fit and she’s pleased about that, but she needs new shorts. Not sure if any of this matters but: She won’t be attending summer camp this year. We will spend four weeks vacationing, and the other 5 will be spent at home. She’s not allowed to wear shorts at school, she wears a uniform, so we are talking 9 weeks of wear, plus weekends before/after school ends/begins, until the weather changes in fall. So far she has 2 pair of bike shorts, 2 jean shorts, and 2 older “play” shorts. Please help this overbuyer properly gauge how many shorts we will need! |
| We do enough for a week without washing + a few pairs of nicer ones for random times when they need to look nicer. |

Does she play any sports? My DD has at least 8 pairs of athletic-type shorts that she will wear all summer long, but she will also wear them to soccer.
I think 12 is past the age where she's going to wear bike shorts without anything else, but maybe not. I say go to old navy and get 5 or 6 pairs of athletic shorts in various colors that she can pair with a tshirt. |
She definitely wanted them. They are the kind worn with boxy cropped tops. I guess it’s popular. |
| My almost 11yo DD has 6 pairs of athletic shorts, 5 pairs of regular shorts. Kinda long because she likes the boys longer style, and 3 pairs of school uniform shorts. I’m an over buyer as well but this seems about right to me. Most of hers come from the thrift store so I’m not spending a fortune. |
| You are wealthy. 8-10 pair |
| My DD has 10 bike shorts, 5 running shorts/compression shorts (she runs Track), 2 denim shorts, and 2 basketball shorts. |

I got my tween (who also isn't going to camp but taking a 2 week vacation) a 5 pack of comfy women's shorts for summer. She has khaki shorts due to her school uniform, and I'll probably buy a pair of jean shorts for some beach photos, but that's it. The ones she has are also slightly big so even if there's a growth spurt they'll still fit.
We did women's shorts because they had a longer inseam (5" vs 2"). I think they were around $35. |
| The 6 you have plus, perhaps, a pair or two of "fun, stylish" shorts that she can pick out herself and feel good about if she wanders out and about with friends. My 12 year old is growing like a weed, so I'm also committed to not over-buying for once. |
Same. DD has around 8 pairs of athletic shorts but she wears these to practice and everywhere else. She has 2 pairs of jean shorts that she rarely wears. |
I am uber wealthy. How shorts does my kid need? |
Can you link? |
| I buy them as needed. It’s an endless cycle of going through the drawers, taking the too small ones out and make room for the next size up. I bought some recently and will buy again as summer progresses. |
| Seven. |
| We buy for the summer based on the camp packing lists, which says 8. That's about right for us for the whole summer. |
