MYP project at BCC

Is it necessary to complete the MYP project in tenth grade if student does not intend to do the IB program?

No.

How many kids actually do it?

My 10th grader said most of his friends didn't do it or they just put recipes in a book and said they learned to cook.

This sounds like a great opportunity for a student to pursue a personal interest. I'm not sure why parents wouldn't encourage their kids to do it.

My older BCC grads did simple projects on an interest they had -- both projects related to their sports. They did not do the IB program. Most non-IB kids didn't do the project because there wasn't any real guidance from the Admin and no reward other than a designation on their transcript that they did it. BCC now has come up with a diploma certificate in cultural studies I think in part to increase the number of people doing the project. Under this program according to the outline, your dc would take Honors 10th grade English in cultural studies and do a "group" 10th grade MYP project with that class. If the student takes four approved "cultural studies" courses before graduation in addition to the special 10th grade English class and MYP project, they will graduate with a certificate in cultural studies and a designation of some type with their diploma. Since this is new since my second DC graduated in 2022, my rising freshman DC will learn about it next year.

At RM it is required but it is kind of a joke. I wish it could be just focused on the kids who are interested. It takes so much teacher time and most kids are just trying to check a box. My son did not take enough language for the MYP diploma but was still required to do the project.
