Great Theater Camp to Recommend

If you're looking for a sleep-away camp for this summer, I’m reaching out to recommend a summer camp offered by Traveling Players (travelingplayers.org/summer-camps/). We found out about it last year also via listserv from a fellow parent. Having looked at a bunch of others, it definitely stood out, and my son absolutely loved it and is going again this summer.

It is a sleep-away camp located just an hour or so from DC in Leesburg, VA and their model of “great theater in the great outdoors” has kids doing almost everything outside, from rehearsing scenes to performances. There’s stage combat, hiking and all sorts of regular camp fun as well as improv comedy, tons of games, and an incredibly supportive “ensemble” model that encourages friendships. A few highlights for my son were the costume-themed dance, color wars, and great conversations and bonding time with cabin mates.

Traveling Players offers two and three-week sessions for kids from 4th grade through high school. Projects are tailored to each age cohort (like a three-week slapstick comedy camp for 6th – 8th graders). The kids stay in cozy lodges that have electricity, AC, and daily hot showers.

They require an audition, which might sound scary but is actually low-key and fun. These auditions are scheduled on a rolling basis and can be held virtually. That said I wouldn’t wait too long to audition because they only have a couple spots remaining for this summer.

Happy to chat if it’s helpful - such a fantastic group,
KK
