medicine for dog allergic to pollen/something outside

Anonymous
Our dog (Jack Russell Terrier mix) has allergies to pollen and is often biting/licking around the paws. Has been taking zyrtec AM and PM but it doesn't seem to be doing much good. Does anyone have any good experiences with other medications for dogs. (Pills or shots?)

Apoquel is the only thing that works for my dog to prevent reoccuring skin/ear infections. Cytopoint shot also works for some but unfortunately the effects only lasted a few days for my dog.

Dogs can have Zyrtec and Benadryl. Look up the dose per body weight.

Ask your vet…

Same, our dog is on daily apoquel

Apoquel and cytopoint shots. Our dog, a German shepherd, was on that for a year before we found a vet dermatologist who diagnosed her with doggy lupus. She's still on Cytopoint once a month but now gets different pills for her condition. This spring her eye discharge has been terrible, I need to find out if they have allergy eye drops for dogs.

Has anyone has luck with that for itchy ears? My own ears itch if I don’t take Zyrtec and I’m wondering if it would help my golden.

I’m 13:19 and apoquel has really helped with ear scratching. I also clean his ears weekly as no matter what, pollen gets in there and he’s definitely a contact itchy dog.

Anybody seeing this spring is worse on their dog? Mine is on cytopoint AND apoquel (not to mention medicated baths) and I’m STILL battling itchiness. Good lord!

We had a lab severely allergic to lots of trees and pollens (both here and in the south). We used an allergist, and got shots we administered. Added in the pollens from southern pines, etc after a year and within two years she was no longer allergic. Stopped shots after 3.5 years. Lived a long, itch free life.

After my dog being on Apoquel for 2 years, I would try to avoid it at all costs. I had no idea it could be a potential issue with long-term use until my vet casually mentioned he shouldn't be on it long-term after TWO YEARS. It's almost $90 per month and once they start it, it is really difficult to quit it. Every time I cut back the paw chewing started back within days. We moved to wiping paws when coming back inside. Added salmon oil to their diet along with a probiotic. We use a cone to help with chewing and licking. It's been a few months and my dog is doing much better without Apoquel.

Interested to hear more PP - I’m the one who asked if anybody else’s dog has worse allergies this spring and we’ve been on apoquel for a while. Did you see any problems? Do you see the same relief with salmon oil and the probiotic? Can I ask what oil and probiotic your dog is on? Would love any kind of relief for my dog right now.

Been on Apoquel for the past 3 years with our almost 4 year old hound and it's the only thing that works. Tried Benadryl but it did nothing. Costs about $150 for 3 months supply at Costco for a 65 lb dog.

We had a lot of success with quick daily diluted iodine foot soaks. Once your dog starts licking and biting their paws, it doesn't take long for bacteria and yeast to build up along with the allergen. An iodine soak reduces the yeast and bacteria from all the biting and licking and washes away the allergen.
