Crew Opportunities

DD is in 8th grade and interested in trying crew. Her HS doesn't have a team to try out for. We live in NW DC.
Does anyone have recommendations on local clubs for a beginner?

Thompson Boat Club (TBC) has a great learn to row program over the summer. Potomac Boat Club and Capital Rowing Club also have them, I think. I believe those are all the options and I'd feel comfortable with any of them.

She likes the water and dislikes swimming. Was perusing the library, came across a book on it and wanted to try it out.

St Albans has a great crew camp to "get your feet wet" I had all 3 of mine do it for a few weeks and 2 of the 3 wound up rowing in high school. TBC has a team for high school kids who don't row @ their school. The boathouse on the Anacostia might have a high school program as well - DC is one of the top crew areas in the country and the camaraderie amongst the kids is great. also note that the sport in the fall is longer "head" races that are more akin to cross country and in the spring they row shorter sprints, like 1,500 meters. some kids like one season better than the other

The boathouse at Anacostia (Anacostia Community Boathouse Association) hosts several clubs, including Capital Rowing Club, which has a summer learn to row camp. TBC has a summer camp, in addition to the team mentioned above. It’s been a great sport for my kids! Good luck!

Highly recommend this as well. Only need to commit one week at a time. A lot of the high school rowers volunteer as counselors and are a great resource for what it is like to row in high school.

Wakefield HS in Arlington runs a learn to row camp for middle school students. The program is run out of the Anacostia Community Boathouse, though.

Do any programs exist for 5th or 6th grade boys? Does crew not begin until middle school because your arms have to be long enough?

There’s a lot of schlepping heavy equipment and kids need to be able to focus and pay attention for safety and efficiency reasons . Boat clubs also often have a hard enough time finding the space and time slots for master, college, and high school rowers.

It looks to me like they discontinued this camp after 2022.
