| Quick question—are books featuring “transitioning” or trans kids used in the curriculum K-5? Hopefully not in lower grades as the transitioning conversation is age appropriate for older kids like jr or high school. But want to know to have the most updated info. |
| I’ll bite. Should we ensure that the curriculum and books don’t have families with two moms, two dads, or ethnically diverse kids either because it’s not “age appropriate?” What about Jewish or Muslim kids? There’s no difference if you replace trans with any of those subgroups. Early education is how we counteract stigma and discrimination. |
| It’s totally different than religion. |
Trans kids and trans adults exist. Period. They attend MCPS. |
| Kids are not allowed to opt out of the curriculum. The only opt out is for family life and health in grade 5. |
Good! So tired of these bigots trying to force their hate on everyone. |
| OP are you new here? MCPS is an enormous school system, and very bureaucratic. The curriculum materials and instruction varies much less from school to school than I think you realize. |
It's really not if certain religious beliefs do not acknowledge or discriminate against these subgroups. |
MCPS seems to be willing to go to court over this issue. The Council of American-Islamic Relations has made its stance clear and MCPS is ignoring them: https://www.cair.com/press_releases/hundreds-of-maryland-parents-urge-mcps-to-restore-of-opt-out-option-parental-notice-for-sexually-themed-material/ |
| How could they demand a religious exemption in a public school? |
| What if you have a religious objection to learning about math? |
I'm this PP. Or a religious objection to having boys and girls learn in the same classroom? |
| Where is the list of books that affirm and include Muslim students? Hispanic students? Catholic? Jewish? What about inclusive books that include (gasp) diversity of thought like conservatives AND democrats? Where are the inclusive books that include every single identity? We all get our own book lists? |
And where are the books that include and affirm people who practice Whataboutism? |
