Received ticket on my license plate in a state I wasn’t in

Anonymous
I received a ticket in the mail for going through a toll without paying (Florida). I haven’t been to Florida in over a decade, and rented a car when I did. My car has only been in Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania since the plate was issued in the fall. How is this possible, and is it possible to fight it?

Are you certain the ticket is for a toll violation in Florida? Or is it just that the billing company is in Florida? Does it show a picture of the car? (When I get a bill for using route 200, it shows a picture of my car on the road.) Are you sure it's not a weird scam? By all means, verify the authenticity of the sender. Is there a state sanctioned website where they want you to pay? Verify the URL to make sure it's not a scam.

Send a nicely worded letter, via certified mail, that they made a mistake and you weren’t there.

There is a picture of an suv with “Land Rover” in clear letters across the front. My car is a Subaru Impreza. Tried calling the number and seems to be legit.

People can fake license plates. I don't know how likely you are to be able to fight this, but I think you should try.

The toll company reads plates and if there was a plate similar to yours but hard to read because there was dirt on one of the digits etc, they might mistake it at yours.

Those plate readers are frequently wrong so that is why they send a photo. Here’s a funny example

Send a copy of your registration that they have the wrong car

I looked up the ticket online; it shows the same picture, but I was able to zoom in better. It 100% is my license plate number.

You have just admitted guilt.

How? It’s my number, not my plate. My plates are still on my car, I just checked.

Yes. I checked in case I somehow didn’t notice. Front and back are still there, with the plate number that is on my registration.

Good luck with proving a negative. You are going to be talking to the police. The same people who wanted me to prove I wasn't wanted in North Carolina.

Police for a toll road violation? Not likely.

It looks like it, but it becomes blurry when I try to zoom in on that part. Florida’s system just shows the car, doesn’t show a close up of the plate (though the plate was visible in the shot of the whole car).
