Field trips to Florida

Florida has passed a permitless open carry gun law. https://www.flgov.com/2023/04/03/governor-ron-desantis-signs-hb-543-constitutional-carry/

So many of our kids go to Florida for national competitions. How do we encourage those organizations to change the location of their events. I don’t want my kid going to the Wild West to compete in a tournament.

I see people open carry in Virginia all the time.

Not permitless, though, right?

Ugh, and sorry, the new law is permitless concealed carry, not open carry.

You go OP. Yeah, you take this one on. Such a valuable use of your time.

Unless Disney moves, the location of events will not move.

You will just have to restrict your own kid from attending.

I wouldn't want them to hold competitions in a place where local DAs will refuse to prosecute criminals.

So don't let them go. Problem solved.

Well that eliminates Washington DC

I'm with you OP. My kid has a tournament there this summer and I really wish it were held somewhere else. If the team qualifies for the national tournament in CA next year (held in fall/winter), I will have my kid sit out the summer one in FL.

You think your kid would be safer in California? Seriously?

Where do you live? Do you ever go to DC? I feel safe traveling to Florida for vacation but avoid anything in DC at the moment. Turn on the local news. Luckily, there are not mandatory field trips or tournaments anywhere. Don’t sign your kid up if you don’t want them to travel.

NP here
It doesn't sound like OP's concern is safety--it's politics. People intent on shooting innocent children don't care what the "laws" are about gun permits, open carry, concealed carry, etc.

OP, do your kids a favor and get your (probably more sane) DH involved in decisions like this.
