JKLM vs Latin

Would you have your child leave a JKLM school with feeder to Deal and Jackson-Reed to go to Washington Latin middle school?

Totally depend on the kid. For mine, no.

What kid would do better at Latin than Deal?

My kids are at Latin and have several friends who left upper NW schools for Latin. There’s even a Tenleytown bus. So some parents make this choice!

Choosing Latin over our JKLM for next year. Based upon the number of Latin car magnets in the neighborhood, we are not the only ones to have made this choice.

The high teacher retention at Latin is a good reason to consider it. We’ve had a great experience at our JKLM and wouldn’t have wanted to leave in 5th, but it feels like we’ve seen a lot of good teachers leave Deal and DC has gone months with no teachers. That was why we put it on our lottery list for HS.

We left JKLM for Latin and couldn't be happier. But I agree, it is very kid-dependent. Latin is definitely small.

OP, are you IB for Deal/JR? If so, go with Latin as you can switch back anytime. Those who are IB for Deal/JR don’t have to consider what they would do if they didn’t like Latin but those who aren’t, do.

Definitely depends on the kid (the small school versus large school difference is real and there are true pros and cons of each), and also depends a lot on where within JKLM area you are coming from. I am familiar with the bus, but depending on the specifics it could add a LOT of time to your commute/your child's commute over the next 4 or 8 years (but then again, depending on the specifics, it might not).

Why did you put your child in the lottery to begin with?
Was it to see if you would win - or was there something specific you were shopping for?

Families I know who did this wanted a smaller school and community and liked Latin's educational model.

Maybe for a child in the middle who will benefit from a smaller school. Also is Deal/JR your inbound where your child can always switch back for 6th or high school? What is the easier commute?

We are leaving JKLM for Latin next year. We put our names in because Deal seems really huge, we LOVE the idea of a classical education for this kid in particular, small classes, tons of opportunities and a gung-ho staff out to not only prove themselves on a national stage but ensure student success. Private would have been a financial stretch, but it also would have been a kick in the pants for a non-top school (DC is middle of the road student entering in 5th who has an IEP for mild learning disability, which also means that Latin has to honor). We definitely would have gone private for HS no matter what, would not have gone JR (maybe Macarthur?) Now the decision is made.

I also think that unless you are a really stand out hooked kid at a private, the college winds are shifting towards less affluent, academically-principled, more truly diverse (not wealthy URMs and even fewer scholarship kids) schools, like Latin.

We feel like we hit the lottery.

Does anyone know if IEP services are better for kids with learning disabilities at Latin or Deal?
