| Please complain to MCPS if your child’s building hasn’t. It was close to 86 degrees today in my classroom and the rest of the building. We accomplished nothing because they kids were way too hot… as were the teachers. State testing is around the corner and students cannot function in that kind of heat. 28 students packed into a room that is 86 degrees…. We have a 3 billion dollar budget. Absolutely ridiculous. |
| They have to switch over the units and it’s not simple. You can always keep your kids home. |
| My kid reported her school switches Monday |
OP clearly stated they were a teacher. They cannot simply stay home. I am a teacher AND a parent. My school seems to have the AC on fine in the auditorium, cafeteria, and in the hallways, just not the classrooms. Unacceptable. My own child came home complaining about how hot and tired he was. All MCPS had to do was forecast the weather predictions which is exactly what our condo building did and turned the AC on early this year. It really isn't that difficult. |

There’s never a sweet spot for the switchover. Spring in the DMV is always a seesaw.
Several days next week are predicted to have lows in the 40s, including a low of 41 on Tuesday. That said, I’d personally err on the side of too soon. You can tell kids to bring jackets if temps drop again, but there’s not much you can do about hot classrooms. |
Amen to this. |
| And a lot of the classrooms don’t have windows that open! |
| I'm from the Los Angeles and this switchover stuff completely baffles me. You should be able to have the AC on in December if you're willing to pay for it and the heat on in July if you are so inclined. The apartment buildings where you don't have to pay utilities makes sense, but for everyone paying their own bills? No. Way. |
*From the LA area..in MoCo now. I stand by this being absurd. |
MCPS is not bound to the ridiculous "Landlords-Tenant Relations-Obligations of Landlord-Air-Conditioning". They are operating on a 3 billion dollar budget. Students dont deserve this bs. With all the testing coming up? Yeah, a 92 degree room is optimal... Even funnier, MCPS keeps preaching "keep their mental health intact", yet they cant even provide them with proper building conditions. Instead of saying "it's not simple", maybe trying advocating for change. |
Keep voting the Apple ballot. |
What does your principal say is the reason the AC isn't on? |
OMG no wonder they have to increase taxes. When I was a kid no schools had AC. We just opened the windows. |
Many classrooms don’t have openable windows!! |
Teachers like the heat. If they didn’t they would get their union to demand tolerable working conditions. |
