WMATA Better Bus Plan

The new bus maps are online. The first map is for the short term and the second map is for the long term.

Lots of difficult decisions in there. This is gonna be controversial.

Why would any ride the bus when metro rail is free?

Strolling past the fare box doesn't require jumping?

The main strategy looks like getting rid of routes and more frequent buses on whatever remains. Some of the proposed cuts are pretty brutal.

It’s very clear that under Randy Clark WMATA had decided that it no longer wishes to be a regional transit system and only a transit system for DC.

Let’s just lean into this and codify that WMATA can only provide bus service inside DC. Routes to destinations in Maryland and Virginia should be serviced by those transit systems. Like Loudon Transit’s commuter bus service.

Or alternatively, provide a higher level of service in the city’s core. That’s what these maps move toward, and it’s a good idea.

Or the region's core. It looks like a good idea to me, too. Bus service needs to be frequent and reliable.

I don't know, I see longer Montgomery County routes in the future map than on the current one.

It is amazing few people now take the bus. Ridership is less than it was 20 years ago

The future map anticipates that WMATA will provide planned BRT service. Which is a faulty assumption.

I live in Columbia Heights and take the bus all the time. They're usually full.

It looks like they want to boost frequency on 14th St NW so I love that. I also like better service up Conn Ave. It infuriates me how poor the bus service is there.

The new F29 is a disaster. Morning buses are missing. At 4:10 PM at the Pentagon station and nothing is scheduled. What a joke wmata!

Gross who uses these?

I want to take the bus but the routes I need only run every 30 min. I can walk to a metro station in that time and still get to the destination faster.
