| We're starting to think about High School applications for our rising 8th grader, and I'm wondering, are there any area private and/or MD magnet schools with great performing arts programs? Where are the performing arts centered? We live in MD and have heard way too many concerning tales about Duke Ellington, so we have ruled out that option. |
| Holy Cross (AHC) has an outstanding theater program. They also have a two week summer stock program. |
| GDS for theater |
| For boys, Gonzaga. |
We took our DD to see a production there a few years ago. I was totally blown away. It was amazing. I think the girls were from Visi. |
If you're talking dance and your kid is serious(on Pointe), you are better off with a studio. Privates won't come close to that level of instruction. You'd be paying tuition for Ellington. Not sure you'd want that anyway. |

It's important to specify what kind of performing arts, and gender. AHC is a good example. It has fantastic programs for girls who are interested in musical theater, or dance. It's not great for instrumental music. It's got nothing for boys whatsoever! DeMatha's vocal and instrumental music is probably the strongest in the area, but that's not helpful if you have a girl.

| Which performing arts? Theatre/musical theatre? Choir/chorale? Dance? Band? Orchestra? |

As someone who used to work in this field, I’d consider a couple things:
- Is your child a dancer at TWB, MYB, or another serious studio? Are they a musician in a youth orchestra? In those cases, maybe consider strong academic schools that have flexibility for out-of-school arts commitments (say, that give PE credit for dance). - Has your student trained at a high level or is this more a favorite hobby? Depending on the answer, I’d focus on schools that really care about the arts AND prioritize participation. I went to a school that put on amazing shows … but you barely got to do anything until 11th/12th grade unless you were pro level. |
